The mission of the Waldorf Steiner Education Association Singapore is to promote Waldorf education in Singapore. We have the following co-operative initiatives to provide educational opportunities for children as well as adults:
- The Early Childhood Programme is a mixed age class for children aged 3.5 - 6. The class is run by an experienced Waldorf Specialist.
- Parent and child groups for children are run by mothers interested in Waldorf education.
- Craft group. This is an informal drop-in session for anyone interested in Waldorf education who would like to learn to make Waldorf-inspired children's toys.
- Workshops by Waldorf education experts from abroad.
- Seasonal celebrations for the whole community such as Chinese New Year, Easter, Deepavali and Christmas.
The Association and all associated activities are run by the members, who are committed to contribute their time and effort to provide Waldorf education in Singapore. Every member contributes to the community in some way - through the playgroups, craft groups, running of the school, organising events, etc.
Participation in any of the programmes offered by the Association involves commitment to the ideals of Waldorf Steiner Education. Some of these ideas are quite different from the mainstream educational approach. It is a child-centred approach that aims to educate the mind, body and spirit at the appropriate developmental stages.
For the first seven years, Waldorf early childhood education aims to work with, rather than against, the child's natural inclination to be active. Children are taught using imitation and example as educational approaches rather than verbal instruction. The child's learning experiences and well-being are supported through the use of rhythm and repetition. Sufficient time, space and equipment are allowed for creative play to unfold. The impact of sensory experience in early childhood is considered vital. There are no academics before P1 and parents are asked to limit exposure to TV, computer, or video games.
Waldorf Steiner education is not simply a case of paying your money and sending your child. It really needs to be supported in the home life of the child, and as the child grows, in the community. Therefore, we are building a community of people who share the same enthusiasm and values for the education of their children, so that we can provide a nurturing environment for children where they can be confident in the knowledge that their world is good, true, and beautiful. |
